Upgrade to the Latest 2.x Version of Azure AD Connect Before August 31st, 2022

Azure AD Connect is an on-premises Microsoft application that powers hybrid identity. It is the sync agent that sits between on-premises Active Directory, and Azure Active Directory. This tool is updated very regularly and must be kept up to date for proper synchronization to occur.

What You Need to Know

On August 31, 2022, all 1.x versions of Azure Active Directory Connect will be retired because they include SQL Server 2012 components that will no longer be supported. Upgrade to the most recent version of Azure AD Connect by that date.  After that date, any 1.x versions may be blocked from synchronizing information to Azure AD.

In addition, all 2.x versions require Server 2016 or newer to install.

Key Points

  • Major: Retirement
  • Timing: August 31, 2022
  • Action: Update the Azure AD Connect agent.

How this will effect your organization:

All 1.x versions will be retired, and no longer supported to sync directory information between Active Directory and Azure Active Directory.  2.x version that are newer than the minimum version requirements listed above, but are not the currently supported version, may experience connectivity issues.

To see a list of the currently supported versions, visit https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/hybrid/reference-connect-version-history.  Supported versions of Azure AD Connect (2.x) will continue to be fully functional.

Required Action

To avoid service disruptions, upgrade to the latest version of Azure AD Connect before August 31, 2022.
